In 1859 John Brown, a radical abolitionist, attacked the physical aspect of slavery. To encourage a revolt within the slaves, John Brown raided the United States federal arsenal in Harpers Ferry. His unsuccessful actions caused a strong reaction in both the North and the South. These reactions further increased the tensions that already existed between the two regions. The abolitionists of the North now believed that they needed to intensify the thought of using force, instead of reform, to end slavery. While the pro-slavery forces in the South, believed that secessionist reform was the only answer.
