During the 1850s tensions between anti- and pro-slavery groups increased greatly in reaction to the Kansas-Nebraska Act. The tensions resulted in violence between the two groups. In 1856, a vote was held to decide whether Kansas would become a free or slave state. Pro-slavery won the vote, but this happened only because people from the slave state of Missouri crossed the border and voted. The series of battles that broke out after the vote were later dubbed "Bleeding Kansas" by newspapers and reporters. Kansas later became a free state on January 29, 1861.
