During the raid on the federal arsenal in Harpers Ferry a total of 17 people died; ten of whom were Brown's men including both of his sons. The other deaths included the Harpers Ferry town mayor, two slaves, and four innocent townspeople. John Brown was not killed, but he was severely injured after a solider attempted to plunge a sword into his side. Brown, and his men, were captured by U.S. forces led by General Robert E. Lee.
