The federal arsenal wasn't the only place that Brown wanted to raid while in Harpers Ferry. He also wanted to attack the musket factory and rifle works. Brown and his men successfully captured the musket factory and managed to capture 60 hostages, who they placed in the fire-engine house. Brown then sent a group of men to take control of the arsenal. The next day, militiamen from surrounding towns arrived and Brown's small "army" began falling. They were soon forced into the cramped quarters of the engine house where Brown made his last stand before falling prisoner to General Robert E. Lee.
