John Brown was tried for treason against the state of Virginia. On December 2, 1859 John Brown was sent to the gallows riding on his own coffin to be hung. When walking up the steps to his death, Brown was surprisingly calm. He had done what he thought he needed to do, and was satisfied with his actions.
