The Abolitionist Movement was an attempt to rid the nation of the burden of slavery. The Movement has roots all the way back to the Declaration of Independence where Thomas Jefferson tried to abolish slavery from the start. Finally, in the 1800s, slavery became a problem. Flare-ups were more prominent across the nation, especially in the new territories of Kansas and Nebraska.
