Initially, some of the members opposed the raid; while others highly approved. In the end, all members supported Brown in some way. Gerrit Smith, the richest of the six, gave Brown $700 to fund the raid. When John Brown was captured, in fear of being found guilty of affiliation with Brown, many members of the six fled the country, while other members carried on his cause in later years during the Civil War.
